Day 46
Nothing much to report today.
Both the bike store and the welder were busy, although I secured appointments with both for tomorrow.
This is how craigslist is going for the most part:
I called a few bike stores but they don't carry anything my size either (or if they do, it's ludicrously expensive). I'll call a couple more tomorrow, just to see.
This welder is probably where I'll draw the line. If he says it can't be fixed, then I'll go backpacking in the Rockies for a little then head home. At the very least, I can rest easy knowing I exhausted every option. The waiting is killing me the most, at this point, I just want a resolution, any resolution.
Fingers crossed though! If all goes well, I'll hit the road on Thursday. If I don't take any more breaks, I should finish the trip in exactly the 70 days I alloted myself.

Hi Isaac,
ReplyDeleteI hope you're not feeling discouraged. Think of your adventure as grist for the great literature you're going to write.. How do you want the story to end ? Arriving on the West Coast with a beat up old bike that looks like hell or arriving on a brand new replacement bike that you sell ? Do you have those options at this point, or is there just one option ? Hang in there. Like our old emeritus minister , Woody, used to always say "Life is a is a process". He would probably say " It doesn't matter when or if you get to the West Coast. What matters is what you do along the way" Love, Papa
Please feel free to contact Gwyn Jones if there are any welding questions. He was one of the three founders of Merlin Metalworks - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlin_(bicycle_company) - pioneers in titanium bikes. In the article about Merlin it talks about its "visually pleasing puddle welds." I don't have a clue what they are but they sound nice. Gwyn is a really good guy. His real name is Gwyndaf--sounds like a character in one of your sci-fi books. I agree with Woody and Papa, "Life is a process." Love. Ronna
ReplyDeleteHang in there. If you're in Boulder, I know a guy who's really in the biking scene and may be able to help. Call me and I can help.
